Pat McCrory Gives Protestors Cookies: Olive Branch or Condescending Move?

Shortly after signing the abortion-regulating bill into action, Governor Pat McCrory hand delivered a plate of cookies to the pro-choice activists, whom were posted across the street from his residence, while they protested.  This action has been highly criticized by the mass media.  It is unclear exactly McCrory’s purpose behind, what critics consider to be, an egregious act.  One thing is certain though: it did not go over well.

Reportedly McCrory handed the “peace offering” over the group of protesters saying, “These are for you. God bless you, God bless you, God bless you.”  While I do feel that it was necessary to sign the bill, I do not agree with McCrory’s decision to make a seemingly condescending “I’m sorry” attempt.  The governor’s action may expresses either an indication that he feels remorseful of his recent decisions or an extension of an olive branch.  There is no record of McCrory making any comments concerning this occurrence so it is difficult to understand the exact reasons behind the ambiguous plate of cookies.  It is entirely possible that McCrory meant no harm and was purely making a genuine gesture but the timing was not appropriate.

  1. I believe Governor Pat McCrory was trying to be passive aggressive with the plate of cookies. It seems to me to be very condescending. “Oh, you are protesting what you find to be an immoral thing? Here, have some cookies. Now be on your way.” I don’t understand the logic here. If he was trying to extend an “olive branch” I don’t think that this was the proper way to go about doing it. As a result, he has obviously offended a lot of people. If he wasn’t doing so out of disrespect, than why hasn’t he made a comment on the issue? Why has he allowed this to escalate if it was not his intention to come off as pompous and above the protestors? I find it very likely that the cookies were not at all a peace offering, but rather that they were a casual gesture used to belittle the protestors.

  2. What was Governor McCrory thinking? That was such a careless gesture. Even if Governor McCrory had good intentions, that act could be easily misinterpreted. The protestors were protesting about a serious topic and his response was to give some cookies. Not to mention the cookies didn’t even look that good…(bigger chocolate chips could have made the difference.) I believe women should have the choice of what to do with their bodies. Although the idea of killing the potential of a life is controversial, it is not a decision for other people to make, but should rather be solely decided by the woman. The tightening of the regulations on women’s clinics, I believe, was passed with bad intentions. I believe that Governor McCrory passed the act to make it nearly impossible for women’s clinics to stay open and not because the legislative was concerned for the well being of the women. Nice post! This is a very controversial topic. How do you feel about the increase regulation on abortion clinics? Are you pro-life or pro-choice?
